Not in that context. Bum is common, but means a tramp in the States! Conversely, butt over here is used to describe a cigarette end, eg people leave their cigarette butts on the ground. I didn't know that. I always thought butt is short for buttocks. That must be where the Yanks got it from!!! But for some reason we don't use this abbreviation.

Alison actually we do use Butt alot in this country too and yes it is short for buttocks in that sense we also have Butt end of a joke and f*g butts and the word arse ha ha ha Okay, if you say so, but I have to admit that every time I hear/read it in the context of meaning sme's rear end it comes across as being v. American. I haven't even heard the schoolkids here use it for that purpose and as I spend all my working days with them I just didn't think it was in current usage even among you youngsters.... Yeah, butt end of a joke is a very common expression...
