I just read at Sebastian's site ( sebastian.queenconcerts.com/ ) that "Innuendo" was actually written by Freddie. Roger only added to the lyrics. Some Queen fans assumed it has to be penned by him, because of the percussion. But this was a major mistake, wich one unfortunely went straight to the Bijou database, where it's got listed incorrectly. So it's still a common belief that Roger wrote that song. ;D

I just read at Sebastian's site ( sebastian.queenconcerts.com/ ) Some Queen fans assumed it has to be penned by him, because of the percussion. And some said it couldn't have been written by him cause his songwriting was never as clever in his songs. He wasn't able to have penned such a song.

That's not all what makes songwriting by Roger questionable. Here a few things why Roger did not write Innuendo. I got that too from Sebastian's site.
Even though Innuendo (except for the orchestral interlude) is not a very complex song (compared to the black side of Queen II for example), this is certainly beyond Roger`s limits:
- Note that hardly any of the over 40 Taylor`s songs (including what he wrote for Queen, The Cross and his solo projects) has more than a handful of chords. How could he just come out of the blue with this one, that has a lot of dissonances and inversions, suming about 24 chords?
- Why and how on earth would a guy who hated key changes (as Roger himself said in the audio comentary of Greatest Video Hits II DVD) write a song that modulates fourteen or fifteen times?
- If you check his solo albums and his compositions with his bands there`s only one change of meter, and is pretty basic. To imagine him coming from the air with a track that changes meter six times (including a non-binary time signature) is like saying a one-month resident doctor can perform brain surgery. Not in terms of "good" or "bad" (because Roger wrote good songs that I, personally, like more than this one), but in terms of complexity. Not only due to knowledge, but also practice.
- Some point out that maybe Roger wrote the "body" of the song (verse-chorus) and Fred put the middle bit. The body of the song has some details that Roger used: all chords are major, and there`s sequential modulation to III (like Action This Day). On the other hand, Freddie (and Brian, and John, for that matter) were also able to write exclusively in major chords; in a same way that in the medical analogy, a brain surgeon is able to treat a simple headache. And finally, even just considering the body of the song, the clever section extension and the use of several non diatonic chords (instead of just one or two) is outside of Mr. Taylor`s compositional vocabulary.

I cannot hack it... Unfortunately I am not able to do this. So ignoring it is the second best!
I'll just add to Sebastian's comments that Roger doesn't need to change the meter in his songs all the time cause his lyrics are brilliant... Just think of "Told my girl I’ll have to forget her. Rather buy me a new carburetor". What's changing the meter compared to this prose!?

I LOVE that one. It's delicious! I always liked his lyrics, but "I'm in love with my car" took the cake! ;D
