Hi Steve - the interview where Roger talks about drumming and mentions Genesis is here:www.pemcom.demon.co.uk/queen/articles/rogbbcws.html
Also, I've come up with some questions about Roger's drumming, if you don't mind me asking - I'm going to take advantage of an expert a little .
1) what are the real distinctive features that make one recognize Roger's drumming? (please explain them in a way that I can understand...being a profane, as I wrote before... Thank you!).
2) is the "reversed stick" common among drummers or not?
3) what Queen song feature a drum machine? I guess "My baby does me" hasn't got any "real" drumming on it - am I wrong? and part of "Rain must fall" at least is "synthetic", isn't it?
Yes, I know I'm a muppet ...Thank you in advance!
Hi Roberta and sorry it's taken so long to answer these questions, been a very busy boy!!
1. Ok, his distinctive features are things which include the big drum sound which he tends to use on most tracks. And as I said before, when he hits the snare drum on the back beat (that's beats 2 & 4 of every bar), you will be able to hear an 'open' hi - hat sound at the same time, which makes it a lot bigger and louder. Take a look at the 'Half a Sonic Volcano' section of the making of A Night At The Opera dvd!!
Also on some tracks, you will hear a little cymbal 'fill' where he strokes the bell of the cymbal (the raised middle part of a cymbal).
2. The reverse stick technique is pretty common place among drummers but only when they need to play a 'cross stick' on a snare, which is the more gentle snare sound you hear on songs like ballads. It sounds like a wood block being hit. (You can hear an example of that in the verses of Queens version of 'Heaven For Everyone'.) As for playing the reverse stick fully on the snare drum like our Rog, I dont think it's that common, though some may do it because Roger does!!
3. Yep, you're right. 'Rain Must Fall' and 'My Baby Does Me' are two tracks in particular which use drum machines or sampled drum sounds. Other Queen tracks that use them are;
I Can't Live With You (Innuendo version)
Ride the Wild Wind.
Days of our Lives.
Radio GaGa.
Break Free
Although there are some tracks which use both live drums and drum machines like Machines (Back to Humans).
Hope that helps you out a little there Roberta.
And may I take this opportunity to wish everyone here on the board a very happy Christmas and a cracking 2007!!!
