I heard that song many times. Roger seems to be very against people abusing women. I mean what triggered him to do that? I can't imaging one of his girlfriends/lovers being abused. You know hes sort of like telling us whats it like being abused by men and they go "you can't hurt me now", like they're free from being abused.

I heard it has something to do with his parents...?

I'm pretty sure there was domestic abuse in his family, usually having to do with his parents relationship. They were seperated when Roger was a teenager, but he rarely comments on this, which is understandable.

Just from my thoughts, I bet Roger didn't like it when his parents were seperated, so why is he doing that to his girlfriends and his children? Thats the same thing Roger's parents done, I wonder how he must have felt, cheating on someone else. I bet he really hurts his children leaving them. I wouldn't like that if that happened to me, also I would never forgive that person who did that to me.

I was thinking about that song, the lyrics that hit me about maybe Roger's childhood during domestic abuse, "No hope left, just pain" "Whisky on his breath, violence in his brain" "Scared kids, with scarred mind" ..............did that really happen to Roger when he was a kid?...................I'm a bit shocked..................... ................but.................thats why he's sooo quiet about his life...........I don't wanna talk right now...............

It's a very autobiographical song, like others, on The Also Rans you can read similar things on the lyrics "When your daddy gets drunk, when you're Ma has no hope When you're tough and you're young, and you've got enough rope"

Hi Girls- I hate to sound like the stick in the mud here, but maybe there is a reason Roger likes to keep quiet about his "personal" life. Uhhh..its personal?! Maybe we shouldn't speculate so much about his parents, his cheating, his girlfriends, the feelings his kids have about him leaving. I love to think about Roger as much as the next person (probably as much as the next ten people in reality), but no one knows what went on in his home, with his parents, Dom, Debbie, etc. Only the people who were there know. I just feel like some areas of his life are better left to him and our constant picking apart of what "he" did to "them"...who knows...maybe someone did something to "him". Just food for though. Regards- Robyn

Very well said Robyn. I agree with what you said. Yes Roger wrote a song about the subject but maybe it was therapeutic for him. We do not have to know everything there is. Nor should we feel we have too.

I can understand completely what your saying and I do agree Robyn but unfortunately that doesn't stop people from talking about it. That's what message boards are for

And thanks to Hadas for posting the newspaper!

Nor should we feel we have too. I agree too. We have a proverb which in English sounds "To tell aloud is the best way to forget". Maybe this is the key to this song? I understand this song as a warning. You know, in my early years my family wasn't allright for the same raeson. But my parents could help this trouble, thanks God. When I heard "Surrender" for the first time I remembered every pain, every tear - and now I swear that NO ONE will hurt me and my future kids!!! This song is perfect way to increase the self-respecting. "Erare humano est" - human makes mistekes (Latin proverb)

Hm... I noticed that I've made a mistake in a word "mistake"... Funny, even don't want to modify the previous post!
