So blame Jen if you want to 'cos she reckons it's okay that I go ahead here. Roll up all those interested: This thread will be devoted to conversing about any of Roger's material for Queen or solo - I'll talk about anything except the Cross as I don't have any of their stuff. Anyone want to start off? This is completely democratic!!! Otherwise I should be able to think of something, I suppose!!!

I have all the Cross stuff- some of it is very 80's and tacky so don't buy it unless you can cope with that sort of stuff!!

Hmm what can I say about Roger's music................... Some of it is SO bad, but then some of it is great (talking mainly about his solo stuff right now). I find it hard to work out how he can come up with the most amazing songs like Man on Fire, Strange Frontier, most of Happiness? and A nation of haircuts but then the other stuff can be so shit. I don't think Roger has many OK songs- they are all either awful or brilliant! What does anyone else think?

That's an interesting point 'cos I was looking at VH1 Classic the other day and wondering 'What was so good about the 80s?' They keep on playing 80s stuff but my outstanding memories of the decade are Margaret Thatcher and bad hair LOL Quote Roger in Mojo: 'There was always a new machine back then - and they were all out of date and being used as coffee tables within six months. Blame the 80s (laughs). There was a lot of awful, dreadful shit in the 80s'. ;D

(I gave up trying to read the peculiarly slanted lyrics on the sleeve of Fun In Space until I manage to get them to my opticians to work out how to do it bearing in mind I have astigmatism LOL ). 'Nation of Haircuts' is brilliant - it always makes me laugh. ;D I'm extemely fond of 'Foreign Sand' and the next song I'll deal with on my solo page is 'Dear Mr Murdoch', but I want to look up a few things for this first...

Fun in space in my opinion is cringe worthy to listen to and so is shove it album. So 80's!! The only decent song on FIS is Good times are now (i think)!! Electric Fire is Roger at his best. He was slowly coming into it with Happiness but there was a edge to that album which Electric Fire didn't have and made it just that little bit better ;D

I am an 80's person and just discovered Roger around the time this album was released and I played it 24/7 and my parents hated me for that! Still love "Airheads" very much and it was a funny album and I still listen to that every once in while. Electric Fire is Roger at his best. He was slowly coming into it with Happiness but there was a edge to that album which Electric Fire didn't have and made it just that little bit better ;D But I do agree here. Though it took me ages to like Happiness and now I finally do (most of the time) I think EF was definately his best album. I so wish he'd put out another solo album... But he won't.

Of the 80's stuff, I have to say that I prefer the Cross stuff to the Roger solo stuff. The solo stuff is tacky in a different way to the Cross- The cross is pure 80's class! Shove it is one of fave songs!

As regards FIS, I listened to some of it again today, 'My Country' sounds interesting, but, as I mentioned, I've no chance of reading the f...ing lyrics - no doubt this style was okay when the sleeve was Vinyl LP size, but not now!!! I'd have to listen a few more times to get all the words but it helps to have them written (sensibly!) Obviously, if an album marked the early days of a person's interest, it will remain highly significant, just as Queen's first four albums are to me. 'Tenement Funster', for example, is a song that I thought I'd completely forgotten in all the years I hadn't heard it, but I hadn't actually! As Roger mentions himself on the sleeve of FIS: 'I hope you enjoy and have fun with this, my very own album. I like it. If you don't, sod you!' ;D I think most people would agree that EF is his best album, but in terms of his ideas - held within the lyrics - nothing beats 'Happiness'.

Well, as I say, I don't have any Cross stuff, but have now found a site - www.pemcom.demon.co.uk/queen/ - with all the lyrics, Roger Solo AND the Cross - so I can now sort out what's going on in FIS a little better. One Cross song I have heard - on the Rock Radio - is the original version of 'Heaven for Everyone' - with that wonderful start.

Well I've got all the Cross stuff, but from his solo albums I only have Happiness. And I love it. I love to listen to it in the evening after going to bed. It works quite well because the songs are all quite relaxed. I'm watching out on ebay for the rest of his solo stuff.
I just love blue rock, too and mad, bad is also great. I also quite like the lyrics on blue rock. The songs on Shove it are a bit strange - well 80s as you said. But they still have nice melodies. I was always quite sorry that they left out that middle-part in the Queen version of Heaven for Everyone with Roger singing. I also have two singles of The Cross: new dark ages (with a live version of Man on Fire) and life changes (with Heartland).

I totally agree there - one of the first albums I got was Hot Space and that does hold a special place for me. It's not the best album ever but there is something there
