He got worse. I spent the night on the ground beside him in a sleeping bag. We've been to the vet this morning and he gave him some stuff. Now we'll wait and call the vet again at 15:00. If Tommy isn't better by then we'll have him put down...

From my blog:
My dear, dear cat Tommy died today. We had him put to sleep about one hour ago.
We knew the day would come of course. He's 19 years old after all.
At least he didn't have to suffer for very long. It started yesterday evening. He couldn't move his hind legs anymore, neither could he sit on them. He was very hungry though and when I lifted his hind legs he walked through the apartement like nothing was wrong (with me running behind him, holding his legs). It got worse before we went to bed. When we wanted to carry him into my room he cried and the other paws were limb, too. He also had problems to breathe and it looked like he was in pain. I slept beside him on the floor of my room in a sleeping bag. It was a bit better at night but in the morning it got worse again. He began to pee and cry and breath hard again. We went to our vet the morning and he gave him some stuff but didn't give us much hope. We should wait until about 3 pm and if he didn't get much better we should put an end to it. He didn't get much better. He didn't have any more pain and he could breathe easier, thanks to the medicine the vet gave him. He ate some chicken, had a very strong appetite. He also lcked my hand a bit. We drove to Freiburg to the veterinary hospital. My mum doesn't get along very well with our vet. And he's close by, we don't want to walk by all the time and have to think about all this. On the way to Freiburg Tommy even protested a bit, but you nearly couldn't hear him. Anyway, the women at the veterinary hospital were very friendly and nice. They agreed that it was coming to the end. I caressed him while he fell asleep. But I didn't want to hold him and feel him go limp. I also didn't look him in the face, his eyes weren't closed. It was the first time I saw someone die. I know he's "just" a cat, but he's been there more than 2/3 of my life and for me he was a person and a part of the family. I can't remember a life without him.
My mum feels terrible, she cries a lot. I also cry. I already took something against the headache. I was hardest perhaps when we came home. Since my dad brought him home on my birthday, Tommy was always at home (except one night). So coming home and knowing he's not there just feels terrible. I felt like I couldn't breathe. It all seems so empty. Everywhere there's his stuff, his toilet, his food and water, his blanket to rest upon. No-one lying on the bed, lifting his head when you come home, no-one curiously coming into the kitchen when you come home from shopping, no-one complaining that you're not fast enough in preparing his food, no-one sitting beside the table when you eat, no-one to sniff at your toes during workout, no-one sleeping in my bed on my feet at night, no-one to cuddle into when taking a nap, no-one sleeping in his armchair while we watch TV in the vening...
Lay down Your sweet and weary head Night is falling You have come to journey's end Sleep now And dream of the ones who came before They are calling From across a distant shore
Why do you weep? What are these tears upon your face? Soon you will see All of your fears will pass away Safe in my arms You're only sleeping

Elenir, I do lack the words in English to express my feelings and are crying at the moment. I so very much know what you meant when you wrote about Tommy's passing cause this is exactly what I went through when we put my first cat, Henry, to sleep, also at the age of 19 and I got him when I was 10. His behaviour was exactly like Tommy's was last night... Surely you did the right thing putting him to sleep so he no longer has to suffer and he didn't suffer more then necessary. This is something you can be very proud of. You (and your family) were acting to his best and not to yours. And don't listen to people who say it was "just a cat". He was so much more. For me my cats are family members and you spend years and years with them. In your's and Tommy's case it was a very long time. And he had a very good one with your family and he was loved and looked after. I am sure that after some time these thoughts might comfort you a bit. They might not do it now as it is just too fresh. I am feeling soooo sorry and sad for you. I wished I could comfort you more....

It's awful to say goodbye to someone you love (he wasn't just a cat), he was part of your family and I'm so sorry for you. I know how you feel and rest assured we're all thinking of you at this time.
